  1. Thanks for the update Jacob, nice to see a 2nd editon of UCT coming out, loved the first one! Also is Grandmaster vs Amateur going to be annotated games of Grandmasters vs Amateurs? Or something else?

  2. Hi Jacob,

And what exactly is “Tactimania”? It sounds like Glenn is over his arm injury as well – good for him!

    -Tony

  3. Jacob Aagaard

Tactimania is a puzzle book with a lifetime of tactics from (mainly) Glenn’s and Christine’s games.

  4. When the Karpov books will be available?I can order they now?If i do now a preorder for the Grunfeld i will have the right of both books?Congratulations for the best chess books in the world. Thanks from Brasil.

  5. Jacob Aagaard

Marin is indeed working on not just one, but two projects. He is working on his own thing, and he is helping a friend to write a book too.

No, the Grunfeld offer was to those that bought the first book with the expectation of getting all the material. As everyone now know the book has been split, so people are not being missold anymore, which is what I wanted to avoid.

  6. If I order the Karpov books and the Grunfeld hardback books at the same time (ie qualify for free postage), will you despatch all 4 in one go when the Grunfeld books are released, or the Karpov books first? Obviously my preference is for the second option!!!

Also, in the UK would it be Royal Mail who deliver? Just want to be sure if they can’t get them through the letter box, it is somewhere I can collect myself.

My apologies if this type of question has been asked before, but could not see it in the FAQ section….

  7. Jacob Aagaard

It is sort of indirectly indicated in this: 1. When will I receive my order?

Orders are usually sent within in 1-2 business days and take anywhere from 2 days to 4 weeks (in extreme cases) to arrive depending on the destination. Average delivery time is two weeks. Orders for books which have not yet been published are shipped immediately once they are published.

But we shall of course make it clearer.

Just to be exactly so – We send the books when we can. If we send three books together, we send them by UPS usually, with the exception of in the UK, where we might send royal mail.

If you ask us specifically, we could send the books in seperate parcels, so that they can fit through the letterbox.

I have a question for international shipping, as well as shipping in general: Will QC add the option of an express shipping both EU and international (with or without tracking number options) for those customers who want the product more quickly? Of course in this case the faster shipping will cost more, but it might be useful to those who live far away and for whom the delivery time is a bit longer.

  9. The Karpov books are available now?I ordered both and i want to know if they are already shipped?thanks for the attention.

  10. I know it is still far away but Jacob could you tell us more about the 2 volume work you are planning to do about strategy? I think its called “Thinking inside the box” or something like that, also some info about “Positional chess sacrifices” and “Advanced chess tactis” would be nice.

    Best Regards

  11. Jacob Aagaard

The Karpov books will be available next week. We will send them out as quickly as we can.

Re: Shipping. If you are in the EU (not UK) and order three books that are available at the same time, we almost always send them with UPS. But I am not sure this is faster than normal post to some countries, if any. Express shipments would cost 100s, so it make sense. We are not sending anything economy, but we are not going for curriered express either.

If you are in North America, the fastest way to get our books will be through Chess4Less, ChessCafe and USCF Chess Sales. They will have the books on Friday, I think, while some shops in Europe will have them Tuesday or Wednesday.

My two volumes on strategy: Vol 1 is Thinking Inside the Box. It will take a long time to write. It is about strategy, positional play, how to improve in chess, and various other subjects I find interesting. I cannot see that I will finish it in 2011.

The other book is a collection of Positional Exercises of quite high level. I have tested and analysed them over and over, alone and with students. I have already put more work into them than most people put into a book. I will probably publish when I have 300 annotated ones – as this will be 500 pages :-). What the title or final format will be, I don’t know for sure.

Advanced Chess Tactics is a book on complicated chess tactics by Lev Psakhis :-). It is written and being translated at the moment. I like what I have seen quite a lot.

Positional Chess Sacrifices by Suba: almost written, but this originally 200 page book has grown for the writer and he does not feel he is finished yet. We hope to get it this month and produce it over the summer.

  13. For those of us who are unfortunate and cannot come to glasgow, will there be a short report about Avrukhs training session in the QC headquarters ? 🙂

  14. Jacob Aagaard

Thanks for pointing this out. I will change it immediately. We are quite progressed, but we are publishing six other books first, so it is simply a matter of space in the program; the editors need to finish it up (obviously we are checking the current practice as well).

  15. Looking at GM 10 description I am worried that it looks like a generic product and not a professional one:
“The Tarrasch Defence comes after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 and leads to dynamic play. More text to come…”
What is the meaning of ‘more text to come’ when one sells this product online and there are a lot of pre-ordered copies?!

  16. Many thanks for this update Jacob! This is the 2nd editon of UCT coming up! The first one was awesome! The new one is better, and that’s why i’ve became your first fan!

  17. Jacob Aagaard

Yes, we are still collecting the ransom and putting pressure on the guy – but forcing him to do anything is proving difficult…

  18. Good to know you’re keeping him on his toes. I’ll toss in 20$ extra and a signed copy of my book if that helps…which it won’t.

  19. I thought Glen Flear has some medical problem that meant he couldn’t write.
I thought this was why the Everyman Triangle book is now being written by R Sherbakov?

Strange, now he is writing a book for QC?

  20. Jacob Aagaard :
No – but speaking of that – when will your book actually be out?

I am finishing up the analysis very soon, hopefully it’s all finished before my birthday on May 31st – then there’s typesetting, editing, and all that jazz. A lot of my recommendations in chapters (especially the really minor lines) already finished overlap in places with “Experts vs. the Anti-Sicilians”, so I need to make sure that there isn’t too much overlap, but that it’s mentioned when mentioning is deserved.

    For instance, I have no choice but to go into …e5 Closed Sicilians systems to keep a consistent repertoire, since I’m recommending the solid 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 e5, when White can go 4. g3. The same would go for 2. Nge2 Nc6 3. Nc3 e5 4. g3. It’s a good, underrated system anyway.

Luckily, our 2. c3 Nf6 coverage doesn’t overlap, as I generally tried to avoid …e6 on grounds of unfamiliarity.

I am trying to find a way through the maze of 3. Bb5 e6!? for Black, since that’s the most combative, and the choice of most strong Kalashnikov players (Shabalov, Nataf, Radjabov, Ikonnikov) – this is the one chapter that’s holding me up a bit – a lot of work, hopefully a lot of new ideas.

I know you have some experience with this line – hopefully you like the book!

This would be news to me. I subscribe to ChessPublishing.com, and his “Daring Defenses” section is one of the 6 I’m subscribed to.

Jacob has made claims before that books written by no-name authors, like Starting Out: The Modern Benoni, were actually written mostly by him. Is Jacob now writing for ChessPublishing “behind closed doors” in the Daring Defenses section (i.e. Grunfeld, Benko, Dutch, English Defense, etc.)? 🙂

In all seriousness, if Flear does truly have a health problem, hopefully he’ll have a speedy recovery, both for his sake, and his family’s.

  22. Unfortunately Glenn had to pull out of writing this book,
because of quite a long-term arm injury.
Luckily for us, Grandmaster Ruslan Scherbakov has agreed to write the book instead.

This was written by Johm Emms on the Everyman Forum?!

  23. Jacob Aagaard

Long term does not mean permanent! But I have no knowledge of any of this. Tactimania is not a book with endless amounts of words anyway…

I co-wrote most of Raetsky/Chetverik’s books for Everyman, all of Jan Pinski’s and Starting Out: The Modern Benoni I essentially wrote. If you read the book, you will recognise my style quite easily, I think. With all the other books I added words and checked some lines. The chess is not mine, the explanations most often are.

I did such work until 2004, when I co-founded Quality Chess. I finished SO: The Modern Benoni four hours before my wedding (and heard for it for years…).

  24. Jacob Aagaard

Yes it is. There has been some changes, all language and formatting. The same material, but with a very different layout and style. Some minor changes to the content have been added, but really, you would have to spend a lot of time to find them.

  25. Lukas Wedrychowski

    Hello Jakob

i’ve been looking forward to see the Grünfeld repertoires being released. Amazon offered those books for preorder and so i buyed it nearly 2-3 weeks ago. Now recently you announced that this book becomes splitted in two parts. Do you know how that will be handled with those who already bought or let’s say preordered the grunfeld where it yet was one book?

  26. Jacob Aagaard :Long term does not mean permanent! But I have no knowledge of any of this. Tactimania is not a book with endless amounts of words anyway…

WOW! That must have been some Bachelor Party! Did you decide your groom’s men based on who best knew the Modern Benoni? LOL!

Actually, I can believe the Jan Pinski part of it. Almost everything he wrote was agressive stuff, like the Two Knights, or the Classical Dutch. Raetsky/Chetverik I’d never have guessed was you. Only book I can think of of theirs that I have is the Petroff book, and the writing style just seems different than say, SO: Modern Benoni, or the ones with your actual name on it. You also don’t strike me as one that would have any interest at all in slower stuff like that, seeing that you wrote two attacking manuals, and in the past, Panov against the Caro-Kann (one of White’s most agressive lines), Modern Benoni (agressive), etc.

  27. Jacob Aagaard

My advice is to cancel the pre-order from Amazon. They will always get the books a few months later than the normal chess retailers, so let them get a chance to catch up.

Obviously I would not lie about what books I co-wrote; but the books were theirs, with me helping, with the exception of SO: Modern Benoni, which I wrote, but based on a collection (mainly unannotated) of games by Vegh.

  28. GM Aagaard,

A request: please re-issue “The 62 Most Instructive Games of Chess” by Chernev, in algebraic notation, more diagrams, and the overall magical Quality Chess touch that we all love so much.
    🙂

    Thanks

    Thanks

That’s a wonderful book and I’m puzzled that it has never been revised and reissued in an algebraic edition. I believe that it could be of great benefit to a new generation. Nevertheless, I have trouble seeing it fitting in with the Quality Chess body of work.

  30. Jacob Aagaard

We will of course look into it. I have a feeling it is entirely uncommercial, and we have so many things on our plate that we have to draw the line somewhere.

  31. Didn’t CB promote such a book in a couple of articles over the last couple of weeks? Anyway, Golombek’s pamphlet is so full of mistakes (use Google, there are whole articles devoted to this), it doesn’t deserve a reprint.

  32. Franck Steenbekkers

What is the subject of Grandmaster versus amateurs?

Will in the future an update published of Expert versus the Sicilian? (this would be great!!)

  33. Jacob Aagaard

GM vs Amateur is a series of articles with different content, relating to this topic.

No future Expert vs. is planned (or likely).
