Hardcover limited editions – order April 5th

Having mulled this over for some time, we have decided to yield to the demand for hardcover editions of some of our titles. I had originally said that it would increase the price by 20-30 euro, and it would if we were planning to sell the books through the usual outlets. However, we will only be selling them on this site, and they will be in a limited quantity.

We have thus ordered 32 copies of The Cutting Edge 1, of which 5 copies have already been spoken for. So, 27 remain. The selling price will be 29.99 euro, which basically covers the extra cost of having this limited edition, and hopefully does not leave us with too big a hole in our pockets!

Later on in the spring we will have limited editions of GM4-7. After this we will think. In connection with this I have to violate something I said on the blog earlier – that we will not offer these before an excerpt is up. We will. However, I will not be limiting the number of the edition until three weeks before publication, so those waiting for an excerpt will have a fair shot.

The Limited edition category on the website will go live on the 5th of April.

  1. Too late for me :(. I already pre-ordered Cutting Edge 1. Is there any chance for upgrade? But for sure if there are hard-cover editions of future GM repertoire series books I would prefer them instead of soft-covers.

  2. Great news! I will wait for the Caro book. Karpov Strategic wins will be available in hardback? It will be great to have the Caro-Kann and a future imaginary Nimzo and QID book (Karpov repertoire) together with two volumes of Karpov games all in hardback!

  3. Cutting Edge is expected out on the 12th of Arpil, the same with the Alterman Gambit Guide. I will make a possibility of upgrading the orders possible for a week, starting on the 6th or so, for those who have already pre-ordered the paperback editions. Right now I am preparing for the Danish Championship and need to focus :-).

I could imagine the Karpov books were in hardcover as well.

  4. @Thomas Johansson

Nice to see you here “Knight of the King’s Gambit”!

How fared your book Fascinating King’s Gambit? Are you satisfied with purchase? I hope that you as I are waiting to see what is John Shaw so endlessly cooking in his “THE KING’S GAMBIT”. 🙂

  5. What is the problem with paying by credit card on the site? It is run by RBS, one of the biggest banks in the world.

  6. Unfortunately we will not be able to offer back titles in hard cover, but I expect Marin’s two next books will be hardcover.

  7. Sorry offtopic again…
Has the work on GM Rep King’s Indian (vol 1,2) already begun and if so, who will be writting it?
Also I was wondering whether both volumes will be published together or succesively.
Will Pavlovic be writting Cutting Edge-Open Sicilian 2 as well?
Have you already picked any experts on the Anti-Sicilian?
Do you know whether Avrukh has already started working on the GM Rep Gruenfeld?
Last question, who’ll be writting Cutting Edge- Slav/Semi-slav?

It would be very helpful if you published the respective authors in your next publishing scheddule (as you had done in your 09 catologue).

Just holding the new Avrukh in my hands. Heavy stuff indeed 😉
    Great book!

  8. Hi Alex,

If I want to announce something, I will do it. So, no authors revealed here, but yes, Pavlovic is doing Cutting Edge 2, which we intended to say already – but apparently it was not 100% clear, and Avrukh did say he was working on the Grunfeld. It is the intention to publish the two KID books together, but I have no further comments at the moment.

About the Experts – some are picked, like John and I, some are not.

Well, it’s a common way to pay on the net for many. For me it’s mostly about convenience.

Hi Styria, well the FKG is doing OK for a five year old I guess, though Trafford has changed owners recently so I might move the book if I find a better alternative…

It will indeed be interesting to see what Shaw has been cooking up – if it ever gets served! 😉

I buy books trough Niggemann Germany cause like many other fellow Russians and students I do not have credit cards and other ways of payment.

So I suggest to you Jacob that you give also a Niggemann a chance to preorder some hardbacks for their customers such I am. Otherwise you’re just discriminating me and others who can not buy your books trough your internet site. You don’t want that, want you?

  12. Hi Abramov. I am not actively discreminating against anyone. However I cannot sell them to Niggemann or any other dealers without making the selling price 50 euros. Thus they will only be available on the site. We are not making more on these editions than we would on a normal edition, just providing a few of our core customers with an exclusive product.

Well this is good advertisement for upcoming Shaw’s “THE KING’S GAMBIT”:

Hit me with King’s Gambit, once again 🙂

  14. I am not sure he played Mihail’s recommendation all the way. Anyway, the book is coming on strong and will be out this summer. John and I have put in a lot of work trying to make the lines playable.

  15. Hi Bart. You have been checking with an engine, but not with your mind, I fear. 18.Rf3?? was equally poor. After 18.Bf4 White has a winning attack. Actually I had seen 18…Rxe4, but I just did not believe it. This is what happens when you have two small children – you just never feel rested, even after four days reasonable sleep…

  16. True. But I didn’t need an engine to see that h6 was wrong. In fact that move reminded me instantly of a postition in one of Euwe’s books in which he explained how to defend….

  17. Dear Jacob,
As some other clients I should like to order a bound volume of “The Cutting Edge” by Milos Pavlovic. At the same I want to buy the forthcoming two volumes of “Karpov’s Strategic Wins” (bound).
In the meantime some book-shelves are filled up with many books of “Quality Chess”!!

  18. @Jacob Aagaard
    Thanks for the info.
As for the KID books, Bologan has set the bar already pretty high, so hopefully you’ll make a wise choice and maybe even trump him.
Can’t wait to hold those books in my hands as well. Aldready got quite a ‘quality chess’ collection.

  19. Jacob Aagaard

The hardcover editions will be available from the 5th of April. Only the Cutting Edge will be in a limited quantity at first – as we do not want to “force” anyone to order before they have a chance to see an excerpt.

When we get to three weeks before publication, we will put an excerpt on the site and a few days later we will limit the number of copies possible to about 20 more than has been preordered.

I like Bologan’s book too, but from what I have seen so far, we would not have a chance competing with it.

    You’re serious or you’re sarcastic?

By the way even if Bologan has top notch analysis he hasn’t got any explanations. There is a scope for your writer to fill the gap!

  21. Abramov Anjuhin

Jacob, one more question. Is your series of books “Excelling at…” worth for purchasing? I ask you this because I do expect that you upgrade this books and publish them under Quality chess flag. What do you think about them and are there good for my training (ELO 2100+++).

Thanks man, and have a happy Easter 🙂

  22. Hi, I’m one of those who has preordered The Cutting Edge, and would be happy to upgrade to hardback. I’ll try to remember to visit the site again on the 5th. . . I assume you’ll need my credit card info again?

  23. Jacob Aagaard

Bologan – I do not generally want to use this site to evaluate other publishers books, especially not negatively, for a variaty of reasons, all obvious, I think. However, his book is good, and I did like what I saw in ours better – although I would not expect too many explanations there either.

Upgrade – wait till the 6th, when I am back again, and it will come on the site.

Excelling at … The first book is fun, the second is interesting to an extend, the third not too bad, and Excelling at Chess Calculation and Excelling at Technical Chess are good books. No new editions are planned.. Everyman has the rights and the books are not selling much anymore. I think Excelling at Chess sold 16 copies in 2009.

Rather than updating these books, I want to write some much better ones on similar topics.

  24. Abramov Anjuhin

Thanks for reply. Then I think that’s better to buy your books by Quality Chess in German language, it’s all the same for me.

One more question, Verbessern Sie Ihr Schach – Super Edition is merged book (Excell at chess + Positional play) with full content of mentioned books, and other (Verbessern Sie Ihre Technik im Schach; Verbessern Sie Ihre Variantenberechnung im Schach) are exact trnaslations? If I buy them I’d like to buy yours from Qulaity. And Practical Chess Defence is what in comparison with mentioned books?

  25. Jacob Aagaard

These three Verbessern books are the Excelling books, with the best from the first two in the super edition, while the two others are simply translations, with very few updates.

  26. Hi Jacob

Can I ask do you have any plans to do a book on the French Defence from the black perspective. Some sort of GM repertoire?

    Thanks

    Kevin

  27. @Andy

    Hi Andy,

We are in the final few hours of proofreading, so the Caro should go to the printer tomorrow. So perhaps an excerpt tomorrow, if we are wide awake.

  28. @Jesse
Yes thanks Jesse, saw it yesterday and grabbed it, have been commenting in Chesspub forum on this where there’s a thread on the book. Looks very promising indeed.

I notice that QC books take exactly 17 days to be published after a book goes to the printer. So calculating, GM6 should be released (30/04 + 17 days) = 16 May?

  30. Hi!

I was just wondering how many hardcover editions of GM7 have been spoken for, since I am really interested in buying one.

  31. Jacob Aagaard

I think it is more like 19 days, but this is only in periods where we do not have to book a slot in advance. At Christmas it usually takes longer, as we cannot promise exactly when we have a book for them. I am hoping we will have the book in three weeks from now.

  32. caro book ….is it possible to pay in GDP
and will it be cheaper to buy from chess and bridge.. london ?
    thanks
