7th December

Black lost quickly. Can you find the draw? Not easy of course; it is the weekend!

  1. 1… g3
Push the pawn and hope for the best.
    😉
Or calculate a little bit further:
    2. Rg7+ Kf8 3. Rd8+ Re8 4. R8d7 Re7! 5. Rd(g)xe7 g2
and white has to give perpetual.

  2. so hmmmm… white threatens Rg7+ and Rd8# and anything allowing Rg7 and Rd7 looks pretty terminal too.. so 1… Rd4 2. Rg7+ Kh8 3. Ra7 (3. Rf2 Rf4) Kg8 4. fg4 Red6 5. Rd4 Rd4 6. Ra5 (g5? Rd5) e4 (Rg4 Re5 doesn’t look too good) Re5 Kf7 so maybe i can try and keep chasing the rook with Kf6/7… someone help me out here… must be missing something pretty major.

  3. Ok, must admit curiosity got the better of me and put the position into my stockfish iPhone app. Let’s just say my previous comment was way off the mark! 😉

  4. Being w/o any engine and being enlightened from win 🙂
Why not just gxf3? Rg7+ is pussy being protected by the e rook.
    So… 1.. gxf3 2. Rg7+ Kf8 3. Rxh7 Rd4 threatening..e4 and so on.

  5. Except White can play 3. Rd8 instead,,,, 3. rd8 re8 r. Rd7 rc8 5. rxh7 rxc2 6. kd2 r8c2 7. ke3 re1 8. kd3 and white wins. If only the black passed pawn were harder to capture there might be a nice little trick 😉 .

  6. The game went:

    Edourd – Sebag, 08.11.2013

    33… Rd4? 34. fxg4 g5 35. Rg7+ Kh8 36. Rxg5 Rxh6 37. Rxd4 exd4 38. Rxa5 Rh4 39.
    Rg5 Rh1+ 40. Kd2 Ra1 41. Rb5 Rxa2 42. Rxb4 Kg7 43. b3 1-0

Black could have made a draw with:

33…g3! 34.Rg7+ Kf8 and now there are two main lines:
    a) 35. Rd8+ Re8 36. Rdd7 Re7!! 37. Rgxe7 g2 with a draw
    b) 35. Rxh7 Rd4! 36. Rg2 Red6 37. c3 Rd1+ 38. Kc2 R1d2+ 39. Rxd2 Rxd2+ 40. Kxd2
    g2 41. Rd7 g1=Q 42. h7 bxc3+ 43. bxc3 Qg2+ 44. Kc1 Ke8 45. Rc7 Qf1+ 46. Kb2
    Qb5+ 47. Ka3 Kd8 48. h8=Q+ Kxc7 49. Qh7+ Kc8 50. Qxg6 Qc5+ again with a draw. This second line is not forced all the way of course.
