Any updates about Schandorffs 2nd book and Avrukhs two new books?

Do you have plans for a similar signing session at the London Chess Classic, where Judit is playing (though with odd numbers of players, she would have a free day to presumably do this). I thought the events you held there a couple of years ago (lecture/signing from Boris and Jacob) were well worth attending…..

Lars will be released on Friday. Andrew is coming closer to the end of the editing stage on Avrukh. He has edited 231 word pages (39%) and has 360 to go. It looks like an October publication is still realistic. The second Avrukh book will be quite a way into the future. He has two kids, tournaments, leagues and so on. Think 2013. Also, we need to convince him to finish it!

I think it will be impossible to prevent Judit from doing this. Her passion for this book project is one I have only seen in two other people in this business: Marin and myself. (Others had this kind of passion for one book and then did something “better” [read worse] with their lives… For example Gershon & Nor, the authors of the excellent San Luis 2005).

231+360=561 pages of 1. d4 Sidelines? That is a massive book, but I remember that when I received GM2 in the post that was even longer in pages. Is it still one book due to the big size or will it be split into two?

If the next book by Avrukh is all moves except 1. d4 and 1. e4, then I wonder how many pages that would be given the breadth of material to cover.

It probably depends on the player, and which openings are played against 1. d4. I am only around 2250-2300 and the past few years I have played the Grünfeld, Nimzo-Indian, Slav, Queen’s Indian, Bogo Indian, and King’s Indian. Surely there will be players who play all of those simultaneously…

I am really excited for Judit’s book and I enjoyed the excerpt, but that’s not a very good cover. It won’t stop me from buying it, though.

I would guess that you still do not care a lot about the sidelines after 1.d4 d5 that does not really transpose to 1…Nf6 :-). The main point is that there are several ways to face the London, Torre and so on. And they are like Boris would always do them; real chess!

Really? I am VERY happy with the cover. Maybe when you hold it in your hand you will understand how pleasurable this is as a physical object :-).

I really want to emphasize this: the book is fantastic. Marin and I worked a lot on it, but nowhere as much as Judit. Soon I will bring interviews here with her about the book and hopefully we will have a Q&A session with her here at the release as well.

I think I said this before, but I have to play against those openings 1. d4 without 2. c4 much more frequently than 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 or 1. d4 d5 2. c4, which annoys me. But what does the 561 draft pages translate into book pages? I am interested in seeing how theoretical London, Torre, Colle, etc. are–20+ move branches? 😀

Jacob, I am currently in Istanbul, and will be present at the Judit’s book signing. What rating range is the book aimed at? How much more complicated does it get than the examples in the excerpts?

I would be looking forward to purchasing the 500 page hardcover book then. I suppose 4…d6 and 4…d5 are two ways to play against the Torre (and Colle) with a fianchetto setup for example?

Very strong review by Carsten Hansen of the Morra book on Chesscafe today (maybe his biggest praise of a Quality chess book to date?) Having bought the book, it is a review I would agree with 100% eg his summary “I love everything about the present book: the passion, the enthusiasm, the original input, the writing, and the many entertaining games and variations.”

I buy a lot of chess books and cannot remember one written with such enthusiasm – I tend to the the kind of person who sees the bigger picture than getting hung up on the odd editing slip up here and there.

Congratulations to the writer and publisher on (to me) a well earned seal of approval.

No. We will have a GM Repertoire 1.e4 series, including White against the Sicilian.

We have not fully made up our mind, but the English Attack is not generally the style we were going for. But maybe, as I said, we have not made up our mind.

6. Bg5 in a Grandmaster Repertoire for 1. e4 for the Najdorf would probably require one entire volume in itself. And also what happens with GM6b? That seems like it would be a dilemma trying to work towards a group of repertoire choices with 6. Bg5 in Grandmaster Repertoire Sicilian Volume and simultaneously analysing (two?) choices against 6. Bg5 in GM6b.
