Free ‘Book of the Month’ – July and August

We are continuing our special offer – if you buy three books or more and live in the normal European Union zone (as defined by UPS – for example, they exclude some islands and remote areas) we will send you an extra book free.
Please note that if you buy a Special Offer and are in the EU zone, we will add one free book. For example, the Grandmaster Preparation Special Offer is 6 hardbacks for the price of 5. So if a European buys that, we send Jacob’s 6 GM Preparation hardbacks, plus one free extra book.

The previous default option on the free book was Grandmaster Battle Manual. For July and August we will switch the default option to Carlsen’s Assault on the Throne. But if you already have that book, or would prefer a different free book, then send us an email to salesgroup@qualitychess.co.uk with your order, asking to have it replaced with one of the following titles:

CHAMPIONS OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM
CARLSEN’S ASSAULT ON THE THRONE
POSITIONAL CHESS SACRIFICES
GRANDMASTER BATTLE MANUAL
GRANDMASTER VERSUS AMATEUR
REGGIO EMILIA 2007/2008
THE ALTERMAN GAMBIT GUIDE – WHITE GAMBITS
THE ALTERMAN GAMBIT GUIDE – BLACK GAMBITS VOLUME 1
THE ALTERMAN GAMBIT GUIDE – BLACK GAMBITS VOLUME 2

… just a thought about “A Classical Repertoire” for Black….a Modern Steinitz Ruy Lopez coupled with Siesta variation and Yandermirov Gambit….

Why do all your suggestions appear to involve re-writing books that have already been done?

  3. By the way, I think we have more than enough books on the Spanish already, so it’s high time for some books on other openings, such as various Sicilians.

  4. I still think there is scope for more Spanish coverage – a lot of what is out there seems to cover the same lines. My issue isnt so much at covering books/ lines that have been done before – but doing so with ones that are relatively recent when there are other avenues that could be explored instead. Much of the work QC has done to date has been refreshing in this regard.

If one publishing house bring out a book with a special variation, i see that other publishinghouses bring a book with the same subject. This looks strange to me.
@ Jacob: could you explain this phenome?

  6. @Mark
perhaps one book with …Bc5 systems against e4-e5, mostly Spanish early deviations, to complete the Open Spanish book? also …Bc5 Italian and Scotch would be an alternative to Nikos repertoire.

  7. @RYV
That depends also on your marketing strategy. You can also have a differentiation strategy rather than a copy cat strategy. I guess what also plays a role is the popularity of an opening. It makes no sense publishing multiple books on a rarely played opening, since you won’t sell a lot of those books.

There is always scope for revival and re-evaluation of given lines. Modern Steinitz is very practical for amateurs like us. How often do you get to Closed Ruy or to play Marshall?

Besides, in today’s digital era, everything is playable. Just look at Tarrasch, as described in Thinking inside the box…

I’d be happy if you could propose some opening projects for us and Quality Chess ?

Sam Collins has done a DVD of reasonable quality on exactly this repertoire, although unlike Quality Chess it lacks in enough original analysis.

Its an arms race, and at the moment the market is flooded with for instance materials on The London System for White and Black, despite the fact its dead equal. The London System is being marketed as a dangerous weapon because Magnus uses it to bypass theory (relatively) and beat other elite GM’s from equal positions. To win more games amateurs need a bit more meat on the bone than what the London System offers, and that pretty much goes for most ‘System Openings’ against everything approach

Books are not a good medium for this, its too slow. The latest trend, at least by Chessbase DVD authors, is to provide timely updates and revisions to their work on You Tube. I guess talking is easier than writing.

As an aside I’m a little disappointed that this offers only extends to such a limited geographical area. I have received a free book with each of my last five New In Chess orders, despite them being situated in Holland and me in the Caribbean.

  11. @LeBruitQuiCourt: in my experience at 2000-level, once 3. Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 has been played, white is very likely to stick to main lines (that he may or may not know well). People who want to avoid them do so earlier.

    @Topnotch
They will have a different postage deal than we do. The Netherlands are famous for good postage deals. If we were to send a free book to the Carribean with an order of three books, we would probably prefer you to only have bought one book to start with…

  13. Hi Jacob,

I know this might be a random question – but I need advice on something and I’m not sure how to continue. I am a 2400+ IM and I had to take a break from tournament chess for a year and a half. Now, I’ve been practicing hard with tactics (The Woodpecker method like Axel Smith said) , analyzing top GM games, going through my opening files, and playing a few practice games with my friends. What’s the best way for me to get back into the game well? Any advice would be appreciated a lot!

    Thanks

  14. Dunno where to write, but I just started reading your Positional Play. There’s a mistake already in the first full game. You say 25…Qd7 is a mistake, but it would lead to the same position after the supposedly better move Ne4. Bd7 would come in the end in both variations.

Mljornir just play and stop reading.

  15. And I disagree with giving ? to 31…Nxe2. Computer’s first choice after all. There would be some tricks left after 31…Qc6 32.Nxc3 bxc3. White can move his king perhaps all the way to c2 and black can’t move any way he likes.

  16. Jacob Aagaard

Well, page 21, but OK, I see what you mean. No book is without mistakes, but the amount is quite low in our books, so you can read on with confidence. Will check this. However, I am OK with your disagreement over 31…Nxe2. I think it is a mistake.
