THREE New Books on April 30th

As originally announced, three new books will be available on April 30th – Mating the Castled King by Danny Gormally, Mikhail Tal’s Best Games 1 – The Magic of Youth by Tibor Karolyi and Endgame Play by Jacob Aagaard.

If you read a previous post about how Endgame Play would be delayed due to paper trouble at the printer, then you may be surprised. Me too. Printing on time has gone from “a losing cause” to back on schedule in just a couple of days. But I will take good news even if the process is bizarre.

  1. In business there are two types of people (roughly speaking), those who take your money and then do nothing and those who do everything they can for you and send you are bill in the end. Our printer belongs in the second category and we are very grateful for their hard work and dedication in keeping a deadline, even while being sabotaged with a delivery of the wrong paper as well as us delivering the book three days late…

Just because you make an obvious joke, does not mean that we cannot express our immense gratitude to TRT! Btw. Mark who owns Everyman finally saw our books after we had existed for about 5 years and then started occasionally to print at TRT :-).

  3. I bought GM Prep Endgame Play and Tal’s Best Games volume 1 today. First impression for both books is great! I especially like the large number of excercises and the large variety of endgame types in GM Rep, thanks for another great book! I have a question though @ Jacob: in your book you recommend Endgame University or De la Villa’s book for studying theoretical endings. Would you recommend first studying one of these books before delving into your book (I guess that would be best), or is it also possible to start straight away with GM Prep? Of course I do have a basic knowledge of elementary endings, but I must admit I don’t know all the basic postions form Endgame University by heart 🙂

It is definitely possible to go through my book without having read the two others. There will be a few things you don’t know, but we are really talking 1% or less of the experience that gets ruined. Go with what you want more than anything.

I need to buy shares in QC. Just read excerpts from the Polgar books, Gormally’s book and your book on Endgames. Damn. You are the Kasparov of chess publishing companies. And I’m about to spend big again.

Luckily we are not going public anytime soon. I know we make a lot of mistakes and that we do not always meet the exceptional standards of our readers. But we really really try to meet our own standards within the time we have. And then we let the deadlines slide a bit, if the standards have not been met.

With the Endgame Book I have to say that everyone did more than ever before. I think the book is great. Karsten Mueller called it a masterpiece; and we simply cannot diminish the importance his support and help with the book. I am exceptionally grateful.

The topics are great – all areas are covered. And flicking through the book I encountered many very interesting positions. Can’t wait to start with the book – but first I want to finish GM Prep Positional Play, from which I am learning a lot! Keep up the great work – I hope you can think of new topics to extend the GM Prep range 🙂

Jacob, I follow the same approach with my movies (Which is why my new one took over a year in post-production). And even though I am sure you know this already I’ll say it anyway: we all are *extremely* grateful to have a company like Quality Chess producing books of such exceptional quality and collaborating with such incredible talents such as Mueller. The chess book universe would have a large black hole in it, if it were not for you, John and the team. So a massive thank you from a very happy reader.
