23rd December

More candidates. Imagination is necessary to enjoy Christmas, after we did the hard work on the endings. White to play and make Black’s life entirely miserable.

  1. My main line goes 1.Bxe4 Nxe4 2.Ne6+ fxe6 3.Rxd7 Nxc3 4.bxc3 Qxc3 (4…Rxc3 5.Qd2) 5.Qxc3 Rxc3 6.Rxb7 and in my opinion this ending looks miserable enough to black.

  2. @Ray
After 4… Qc5 5. e3 Rc7 (instead of 4… Qxc3) white has nothing. Better is probably 1. Bh3 and the black bishop and the knight on d7 are in trouble.

  3. White played 16.Bh3! and Black was short of a good move. The main threat is f2-f3. Black played 1…e6 and White took it and was close to winning.

When I return from holiday I will make a little booklet with the 25 exercises.

  4. I looked at this position and tried to use Axel Smith’s thinking methods and Bh3 seemed much clearer. 🙂

  5. Reminds me a bit of the line Giri played to put Avrukh’s recombination against Russain Variation of the Grunfeld line into question!
